The Best TV for Sports, Winter Olympics, and The Big Game

Sports fans seeking the best TV need a screen that holds up in bright light yet looks great with the lights off. Oh, and it needs to be BIG!

The NFL championship game commonly known and referred to by its trademarked name "Super Bowl" is happening on Sunday, February 13, 2022. The annual televised football extravaganza is a major driver of TV sales, and the timing of the game is actually quite perfect for picking up a deeply discounted TV, due to the annual, cyclic nature of the TV business. This will occur right in the middle of the Winter Olympics, which is taking place now and runs from February 4-20, 2022.

If you are shopping for TV to watch the Big Game on Super Sunday, with friends and family and a super bowl of yummy potato chips, chances are you are a sports fan. This is an important distinction because the features and factors you will consider when buying a TV will differ from somebody whose focus is home theater or a dedicated gamer.

Now, it's possible that you want to TV the balances these things or that you are a home theater enthusiast who wants to take advantage of Super Bowl TV pricing, but for this list, we're going to focus on the sports-first TV shopper.

So what's the difference? For sports, brightness matters even more than black levels, which is the opposite of how it works for home theater. Furthermore, sports are broadcast full screen in a 16:9 ratio, whereas movies are often presented in widescreen with letterbox bars. So while an OLED TV offers "perfectly black" letterbox bars that even the best FALD-LCDs can't quite match, for sports viewing this is 100% irrelevant.

I like watching football and basketball, and it makes up most of my TV viewing. And without question, the quality that I find most appealing in a TV for sports is screen size. In this sense, sports fans and home theater enthusiasts do have something in common. But the point I'm getting at is you'd buy a different big-screen TV for primarily watching sports versus what you buy for watching movies. Not that they are mutually exclusive, some TVs are excellent at both tasks.

The Samsung 85" QN90A is the best TV for sports. At its current price of $3299.99 (direct from Samsung) it is an unbelievable value for a TV of this size and quality.

The QN90A is a QLED with a micro-LED backlight. That means it is able to get extremely bright, yet maintain high levels of contrast. It is a TV that is equally at home in a bright room for live TV,, and in a dark space when you're watching a movie. And Samsung has the best anti-reflective coating, which means that you don't be bothered by reflections off the screen about whether it's a lamp or some that window, this TV Is extremely effective at stopping reflections.

If you want something even bigger, spam Sun offers a 98-inch version of this TV for $14,999.99. But that only serves to highlight the incredible value of the 85".

85" too big or $3299.99 too much? The 75" QN90A is $2599.99 from Samsung. But, again, the 85" is only $700 more than the 75". That's why the 85" QN90A is the #1 choice, it's got good looks, tons of awesome features, and incredible picture quality, but it's also got that amazing price.

Speaking of sports, gaming is a sport too, and any of the QN90A models make incredible gaming televisions, but wow, 4K gaming on a top-of-the-line 85-inch Neo-QLED is just out of this world; I can attest to that from personal experience.
