Compact speakers with spacious sound If space is at a premium in your home, you may think you have to settle for lesser speakers. But Monitor Audio challenges that notion. Their Silver 50 7G bookshelf speakers stand to prove just how good compact speakers can sound. The company's Silver series is now in its seventh generation, and these speakers were built to reproduce room-filling sound without breaking a sweat. They'll do a fine job for your stereo system or home theater setup, especially when paired with a powered subwoofer . Seventh-generation drivers The Silver 50 7G speakers sport some impressive technology. Their 1" tweeter uses Monitor's famed gold dome Ceramic-Coated Aluminum Magnesium (C-CAM) material. But this latest version has a new waveguide designed to eliminate as much distortion as possible. The company also revamped the tweeter's magnet for tighter control of the driver, resulting in more detail across its frequency range. The 5-1/4" mid/bass woofer uses an improved C-CAM cone material featuring Monitor's latest Rigid Surface Technology (RST II) for tighter mid and bass response and better dynamics. There's also an improved crossover system that helps the woofer and tweeter work together better to provide a smooth, non-fatiguing response. That means clearer vocals, more realistic-sounding instruments, and sound you can enjoy for hours on end. Well-built, stylish cabinets Having owned some of Monitor's speakers myself over the years, I can attest that they're sturdy as can be. The Silver 50s use thick MDF (medium-density fiberboard) both to make the cabinets more durable and to resist vibrations that muddy sound and decrease sonic accuracy. The finish is eye-catchingly beautiful, and the included magnetic grilles are stylish. But these speakers look fantastic with the grilles off, too. Placement options These speakers are small enough to fit on a bookshelf or table, although I would recommend picking up a pair of speaker stands to get the best sound
