Robust powered wireless speakers When I think about Audioengine powered speakers, words like "convenient," "reliable," and "well-designed" come to mind. These HD4 speakers provide a shining example of those qualities. They use Bluetooth with aptX-HD? technology to connect to your mobile device from up to 100 feet away, so you can sit just about anywhere in the room and still listen to high-quality streaming tunes. If you need to make a wired connection, they've got you covered there, too. Plug in your gear via micro USB, 3.5mm minijack, or stereo RCA and let everyone in the room hear your favorite tracks. When it's quiet time, use the headphone jack on the front of the left speaker to jam in your own little world. My hands-on experience with the HD4s I frequently use the gear I write about, so I can accurately describe how each component works and maybe find some nuance that will help a customer narrow down his or her choices during a browsing session. And sometimes, I get to try two pieces of gear together, for an added bit of insight. That's what happened when I paired the TEAC TN-280BT turntable with these beauties. I kind of did it instinctually, because I had borrowed a pair of HD4s with walnut finish, and the TEAC had a complementary look. But I found a true bonus when I used the turntable's built-in Bluetooth to connect to the speakers. I was able to put the turntable on my desk against one wall - well out of range of a wired RCA connection with the speakers, which were flanking my TV. While I will probably always prefer a wired connection for analog sound, in this funky furniture layout it simply wasn't possible. Fortunately, the Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX-HD? audio coding built into the HD4s provided a strong listening experience that I really enjoyed.
