Monitor Audio has launched its new Studio 89 loudspeakers, a compact stand-mount solution designed to deliver high-quality sound in a sleek package. These speakers are positioned as a modern tribute to the original Studio Series from the 1980s while integrating the latest in audio technology.
The Studio 89 loudspeakers pay homage to their predecessors, particularly the Studio 15 model introduced in 1989. These new speakers retain the classic high-gloss black finish and gold-anodized drivers, a nod to their historical lineage.
Despite their compact size, the Studio 89 speakers promise to deliver a soundstage and detail levels that rival much larger systems. The aesthetic design is unique within the current Monitor Audio range, combining modern technology with a vintage look.
At the core of the Studio 89 loudspeakers is the 'point source' MTM (Mid-Tweeter-Mid) Array driver unit, featuring a third-generation MPD III (Micro-Pleated Diaphragm) high-frequency transducer and RDT III (Rigid Diaphragm Technology) 4.25-inch bass-mid drivers. These technologies, also used in Monitor Audio's flagship Hyphn and Platinum 3G Series, are designed to provide precise and lifelike sound reproduction.
The MPD III tweeters use a micro-pleated diaphragm, which reduces distortion and flattens the frequency response, resulting in a wider and cleaner sound. The RDT III mid/bass drivers consist of a C-CAM (ceramic-coated aluminum magnesium) outer skin, a Nomex honeycomb central core, and a woven carbon fiber underside. This construction ensures the drivers are lightweight yet strong, allowing for accurate sound reproduction with minimal distortion.
The Studio 89’s cabinet is meticulously crafted to enhance performance, the company claims. The geometry includes thick walls, precision-placed internal bracing, and through-bolt technology, which collectively create a rigid housing that minimizes unwanted vibrations. This rigidity allows the drivers to operate optimally, producing clear and detailed sound.
Additionally, the speakers feature HiVe II slot ports designed to optimize airflow and reduce turbulence and air noise. This design element ensures that the sound produced is both powerful and clear, enhancing the overall listening experience.
Monitor Audio has put significant effort into the crossover design, using high-quality components and extensive listening tests to ensure optimal performance. The crossover ensures a seamless frequency response across all drivers, contributing to the speakers' musical neutrality and acoustic transparency.
