Ring has introduced a new feature called Smart Video Search, designed to simplify the process of finding specific moments within hours of video recordings. Powered by advanced artificial intelligence (AI) under the umbrella of “Ring IQ,” this feature allows users to search for specific events using natural language queries in the Ring app, making it easier to locate moments related to packages, visitors, animals, or any other activity captured by Ring devices.
Traditionally, reviewing recorded footage from Ring devices could be time-consuming, requiring users to manually sift through video streams or filter by broader categories, such as motion detection or doorbell activity. Ring's Smart Video Search aims to change that by utilizing a technology known as Visual Language Modeling (VLM), which pairs text-based searches with corresponding visual footage.
This means that instead of scrolling through hours of footage, users can now type specific queries, such as "raccoon in the backyard" or "red bicycle in the driveway," and get results almost instantly.
The system is designed to recognize not just objects and people but also activities like running, jumping, or riding. For example, a query like “running dog in the front yard” could bring up relevant footage without the need to watch large segments of recorded video. This allows users to discover significant events they may have otherwise missed, such as a child playing outside or a package being delivered to their doorstep.
The key feature of Smart Video Search is Ring IQ, a combination of Ring's proprietary AI technology and its expertise in home security. According to Ring, this AI system is responsible for processing queries and connecting them to the relevant video clips. The company emphasizes that Smart Video Search uses VLM to match textual descriptions with visual data, rapidly delivering results based on the specific activities or objects users want to see.
In addition to making searches more efficient, Ring has made privacy and security a priority. The company states that Smart Video Search is equipped with an input moderation system that prevents inappropriate, offensive, or harmful content from being queried.
The appeal of Smart Video Search lies in its ease of use and time-saving potential. Ring customers who may have grown frustrated with the tedious process of manually reviewing footage can now enjoy a faster, more intuitive way to find specific events. Whether looking for the exact moment a package arrived or discovering how a family pet knocked over trash cans, Smart Video Search makes it easier to find moments that matter.
Moreover, the feature is expected to improve security and convenience for both home and business owners. Small businesses, in particular, could benefit from the ability to quickly review footage for incidents like vehicle damage or unauthorized access without having to monitor video in real-time.
While Smart Video Search is a significant advancement for Ring users, it won’t be universally available without cost. To access this feature, users must subscribe to Ring's new "Home Premium" plan, which is set to launch on November 5, 2024. Priced at $19.99 per month, the premium service not only includes Smart Video Search but also offers other features like 24/7 continuous recording.
For Ring users already subscribed to basic services, this marks a shift in pricing and features. Previously, Ring’s professional monitoring and video storage plans were more affordable, but with the introduction of advanced services like Smart Video Search and 24/7 recording, the cost for full coverage, including professional monitoring, will rise to $29.99 per month after the one-year free trial period. The Smart Video Search feature will also be available to select customers as part of a public beta ahead of the official launch.
