Sennheiser is adding another option to its lineup of open-back headphones with the new HD 505—a wired, over-ear model designed for both music lovers and gamers. Priced at $279.95 at Amazon, this model aims to offer detailed sound, a comfortable fit, and modular customization so users can tweak their setup as needed.
The HD 505 is part of Sennheiser’s 500 Series, which includes past models like the HD 599 and HD 560S, and sits just below the higher-end 600 Series. It’s entering a market where wired headphones face some tough competition, including the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X at a similar price.
“The HD 505 is for anyone ready to experience the audio awakening a great set of Sennheiser headphones is known for,” said Klaus Hanselmann, Sennheiser Audiophile Product Manager. “There is something truly special in here that puts serious listening within arm’s reach of the emerging audiophile or gamer.”
At the core of the HD 505 is a 120-ohm transducer, made in Sennheiser’s Tullamore, Ireland factory. The company claims that the 12Hz to 38,500Hz frequency response and total harmonic distortion (THD) under 0.2% result in accurate and natural sound reproduction.
One of the standout design choices is the angled transducers, which aim to replicate how nearfield loudspeakers are positioned. This could lead to a wider, more immersive soundstage, making the HD 505 appealing for those who want a sense of space and separation in their music, movies, or games.
Sennheiser describes the sound signature as balanced, meaning it doesn’t heavily boost any part of the audio spectrum. It should offer punchy bass, clear mids, and smooth treble, making it a good option for users who prefer a natural and detailed sound profile over one that’s artificially enhanced.
If you’ve seen previous 500 Series headphones, the HD 505 will look familiar. It keeps the open-back design, metal mesh earcup covers, and a synthetic leather headband. At just 237 grams, it’s lightweight enough for long listening sessions without feeling too heavy.
One of the more user-friendly features of the HD 505 is its modular design. The included 1.8-meter (6-foot) cable has a 3.5mm plug, and there’s a 6.3mm adapter for connecting to other audio gear. If you need something different, you can swap out the cable and even the earpads. That means you can upgrade to a balanced audio source or add an in-line microphone if you want more flexibility.
While wireless headphones are the go-to for many people these days, wired headphones still have a strong following—especially among audiophiles and gamers who prioritize sound quality and low latency.
