Aqara Smart Lock U300 Brings Versatility to Single-Bore Door Security

The Aqara Smart Lock U300 is designed to simplify home security for non-deadbolt doors, offering multiple access options and smart home compatibility.

Aqara Smart Lock U300 Brings Versatility to Single-Bore Door Security

The new Aqara Smart Lock U300 offers a modern solution for homes with single-bore doors that lack a deadbolt. Unlike traditional smart locks, which often require dual-bore doors to accommodate both a deadbolt and a handle, the U300 is a lever-style lock designed specifically for doors that have only a handle or knob. This makes it a fitting choice for side entries, garage doors, home offices, basements, and storage rooms, where deadbolt locks are not typically installed.

The most striking feature of the Aqara U300 is its support for multiple access methods, which aim to provide both security and convenience. The lock includes a numeric keypad, a fingerprint reader, and an NFC reader that is compatible with Apple HomeKey, NFC cards (sold separately), and physical keys. This broad range of access options ensures that the lock can be integrated into a variety of smart home ecosystems and used by multiple individuals in different scenarios.

The Aqara U300 also supports Apple’s HomeKit, allowing users to store a digital key on their iPhone or Apple Watch for easy unlocking via NFC. This feature is particularly convenient for iOS users who can access their home without needing to unlock their phone or use a key. Even in Express Mode, Apple HomeKey works when the iPhone or Apple Watch is out of battery, ensuring that users are not locked out of their homes in such situations.

For those using Android devices or other smart home platforms, the U300 offers app control via Bluetooth, which is available on both Android and iOS devices. Additionally, the U300 is compatible with a range of voice assistants, such as Siri, further enhancing its versatility.

The Aqara Smart Lock U300 is built using the Thread protocol and is Matter-enabled, which means it can be integrated with a wide range of smart home devices that adhere to the Matter standard. Matter is an open-source smart home protocol that aims to create a unified and more seamless experience for consumers, regardless of the brand or platform they use.

By supporting Matter, the U300 allows for greater interoperability with various third-party devices and platforms, including Google Home, Alexa, Home Assistant, and SmartThings.

To take full advantage of the U300’s features, users will need a Thread Border Router, such as Aqara’s Hub M3, Apple HomePod mini, or other compatible devices like Amazon Echo speakers or Samsung’s SmartThings Station. These hubs enable remote access and further integration with the broader smart home environment.

The Aqara Smart Lock U300 is designed for both indoor and outdoor use, with an IPX4 rating for water resistance. This rating ensures that the lock is protected from water splashes from any direction, making it suitable for external doors that may be exposed to the elements. However, it does not offer protection against dust ingress, so users in particularly dusty environments may need to take additional precautions.

In terms of temperature endurance, the U300 can function in a wide range of climates, from -22 degrees Fahrenheit to 131 degrees Fahrenheit (-30°C to 55°C). This makes it suitable for various regions with extreme temperatures, whether cold winters or hot summers.

The lock is powered by four AA batteries, which can last up to 10 months under normal usage conditions. Aqara has also included a low-battery warning system, alerting users when the power drops below 20%. At this point, the lock will still function for approximately two weeks, giving homeowners ample time to replace the batteries.

In the event of a complete battery failure, the U300 includes a USB-C emergency charging port, allowing the lock to be powered temporarily, just long enough to unlock the door.

Security is a key focus of the Aqara Smart Lock U300. The lock automatically re-locks the door after it has been closed, reducing the risk of leaving the door accidentally unlocked. This feature can also be temporarily disabled, allowing the door to remain unlocked in “Passage Mode.” Passage Mode is particularly useful for events like moving furniture, family gatherings, or times when you anticipate frequent entry and exit.

For added convenience, the U300 allows users to set up temporary digital keys, which can be shared with guests or family members. These digital keys can be configured for one-time use or to work for a specified period, making the lock suitable for short-term rentals or other temporary access needs.

The Aqara Smart Lock U300 is available for purchase from major retailers like Amazon, and at the time of writing, it is priced at $229.99. Initially, the U300 is offered in a black finish, with a silver version expected to be released at a later date. Given its feature set, the U300 is positioned as a mid-range option within Aqara’s smart lock lineup, which also includes the U100, U50, and U200 models.
